She and Stacey Cole (who insists on slowing down) will alternate the Nature Talks column on a weekly basis. The first bird I identified on my own was a black-and-white warbler. I was middle-school aged and wandering through the woods behind my home with my dog. While Eli snuffled in the woods off to the right of the trail, I noticed a flash of movement off to the left. This is how bird identification often begins — a flash of movement. Within that movement, a visual of color. Then noticing if that color is somehow "unusual." Perhaps in a place you haven't seen that color before — red on the belly not the head, yellow under the wings not on the chest. In this case, I had noticed black and white in a striped pattern along the body. This immediately told me it was not a black-capped chickadee, a species that was a frequent diner at my mother's backyard feeders and one whose color pattern of black and white mostly in patches was very familiar. I was too young in my ornithological avocation to be carrying a bird identification book — I was just out walking with the dog. In that case, it is important to gather as much information as you can in the length of time you can observe the bird for later identification purposes. Body shape and size (cigar-shaped? smaller than a robin?), movements (flitting from branch to branch? walking along the ground?), activity (pecking insects out of a tree trunk? scraping up leaves on the forest floor?) are important to recall. Once you get more advanced, you can learn quite a lot if the bird vocalizes, an area of weakness in my bird identification skills. When I got back home, I got out the only bird book we had — the classic "A Field Guide to the Birds" by Roger Tory Peterson. Plate 49, black and white warbler. Bingo. And then you start sharing. In high school, I took "driver's ed" in the spring, i.e., prime birdwatching season. My teacher — also my physical education teacher — noticed that I was scanning the telephone wires and treetops while I drove and finally asked, "What are you looking at?" She made it clear I should keep my eyes on the road, not watch for birds while driving. But I had made an impact. A couple weeks later, a call over the intercom requested that I report to the phys. ed. teacher's office. I didn't recall doing, or not doing, anything specific; I assumed I was in trouble for lack of participation in a class I disliked. No. My teacher wanted to tell me that it was my fault that she felt compelled to spend most of her weekend at the shore after hearing about the sighting of a rare seagull typically seen only in Russia. Sharing bird sightings is one of the few things that I love about Facebook. Postings from friends was how I heard about the "irruption" of snowy owls this winter. It is also how I confirmed that the birds I had seen in numerous pairs around our farm for the past few years were red-bellied woodpeckers, not yellow-bellied sapsuckers, which I knew we had around and I had simply assumed these were as I watched them hop their way up high branches in oaks around the farm. • birdaday: This page is by Phillip Augusta, one of the greatest bird photographers I know of. Just when I think he has posted the best bird picture I have ever seen, the next day he posts the next one. He is local to the New Hampshire seacoast so his postings — accompanied by interesting tidbits about the bird in general and the sighting in particular — are often about birds those of us local to the area might see. April 4, 2014 - The Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waiting list is open for Nevada, Sutter and Colusa Counties. What are Housing Choice Vouchers? The Housing Choice Voucher Program, formerly called Section 8, is the federal government's major program for assisting low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments. The participant is free to choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program and is not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. Housing Choice Vouchers are administered locally by public housing agencies (PHAs). The PHAs receive federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to administer the voucher program. How do you apply for the Housing Choice Vouchers? Applications are available at the Regional Housing Authority office and ONLINE at www.rhasnc.org. Applications can be mailed, faxed or dropped off at the Regional Housing Authority office. Applicants WILL NOT be selected from the waiting list based on DATE or TIME of application. Applications will be selected via preference points and a random lottery. This means you DO NOT have to be the first person to apply to be the first person to receive assistance. How long do you have to submit your application? Although there is no set date for when applications will no longer be accepted, you are encouraged to submit your application as soon as possible. The Regional Housing Authority will post the closing date on its website so you can check this website or call them for information. Historically, applications are only accepted for a short period of time so applying early is recommended. How do you contact our local Regional Housing Authority? April 5, 2014, 3:30 a.m.David Bailey is an irascible, opinionated, absent-minded wind-up merchant. He's also one of the most influential photographers of all time, particularly for chronicling swinging '60s London. Photographer David Bailey, 76, is testing film in his London studio. He is dressed in a dollop of colourful clothes, which he wears loosely and carelessly, like a painter. His patchy white hair is similarly unstyled. He's a little bloke with laughing eyes, which harden suddenly when he thinks he hears something that offends him - but the words aren't in the air, they're in his head, echoes from another era. It's the first time I've met a noun: when I was growing up in England in the 1970s, if a boy picked up a camera and took a photograph, he was, inevitably, "a proper little David Bailey". Bailey behaves a bit like a noun, too - as if his meaning was fixed long ago, and he will, always and inevitably, be used only in a certain way by people who put together sentences. Bailey has just released a hefty compendium of a lifetime of portrait photography, Bailey's Stardust, to accompany an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, which will move to the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra in 2015. Bailey grew up in the East End of London, and has often said East Enders ended up either as boozers, musicians or gangsters. It's not true, of course. They became everything, from writers and merchant bankers to artists and politicians. My Jewish grandfather was an East Ender, and he was a cabinetmaker. But the legend of the East End, like the legend of David Bailey, has a life and logic of its own. One of Bailey's most recognisable images features Reggie and Ronnie Kray, the archetypal East End gangsters, looking haunting and haunted, stylish and murderous. The Krays represent one facet of violent, creative, fashionable Britain in the 1960s, the decade Bailey captured so famously and brilliantly, the memory of which has tended to overshadow much of his subsequent work. It's as if Bailey's time will always be the moment of Michael Caine and Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull and Terence Stamp, when every star was shining brightly and London had the ear of the world. But Bailey has also photographed Australia, and is mildly interested to find I live there. "What's your name?" he asks. Mark. He introduces me to an assistant as "Bruce". The assistant is called Mark. Bailey holds his hulking Polaroid camera close to a young man's face and peels off a head shot, like a proper little David Bailey. He can't get proper Polaroid film these days, but a new company has started to remake it. "How much a click does it work out?" he asks. "About three quid a click? F...ing hell. He turns his attention back to me. "What's your name?" he asks again. Mark. But he can call me Bruce. "I prefer Mark," he says. Bailey says he has driven eight and a half thousand miles in Australia. He came over in 1983, with the idea of documenting the entire country, but abandoned the project after two months' touring the eastern states. Few of his Australian pictures were published, and most of those chosen for Stardust are on show for the first time. They feature Aboriginal street drinkers in Townsville and Cairns. Just as the subjects of Bailey's '60s portraits look like themselves, only cooler, sharper, tougher and sexier, his Aboriginal people seem impossibly black. They were drunk, says Bailey, and threatening at first. They didn't know why he wanted their pictures. He calmed them down with his practised photographer's manner, told one man he was the handsomest he had ever seen. Bailey never made it to Western Australia, but followed the highway all the way up the east coast. "I kept driving and driving," he says. "First of all it was a motorway, then it turned into a kind of A road, then a B road. Then, way past Cooktown, it was a dirt track with a wooden gate at the end. If I do this show there, I might go up there and finish that, on the west side. It would be good there, wouldn't it, then? Except the rains. Uh, yeah, 50. "I loved Darwin," says Bailey. "It was so funny, like driving back into the past. Is this recording?" he asks, tapping my recorder. I'm not sure whether he is joking, distracted, forgetful, or just having trouble fixing the facts about me in his head. Bailey's father was a tailor, who also ran a club. He wore a razor cut on his face, which recent tradition attributes to the Krays. Bailey says he hardly knew his dad, but remembers the vanished East End of his parents and my grandfather, when Jewish people packed the streets of Whitechapel. "All my Jew mates think I'm Jewish," he says, "because I know a lot of Yiddish. My dad worked for a Russian Jew for 35 years. Poliakov, he was called. All his mates were Jewish. Most tailors were Jewish. My mum was a machinist. I think her old man was probably a Jew. In the East End, it's so mixed up anyway. My dad ate all that shit that you fucking lot like, all that rollmops and f...ing pickled herrings. I couldn't stand to look at it, let alone eat it. Today, Bailey has a home in Dartmoor, Devon, and a London flat in newly gentrified King's Cross. He says he left Primrose Hill after 35 years because it had grown "too poncey" and now fears King's Cross is going the same way. "If I'm not careful, I'm going to end up in Dagenham," he says. "Are you writing a thing for somebody? An article for somebody?" Yes. "Are you married? Are you gay? You know, the first time I went to Australia, I thought, 'This lot are too butch to be straight. When Bailey was young, the painter Francis Bacon tried to pick him up. "Him and Dali, actually," says Bailey. "But Dali wasn't gay, he just took a liking to me. I met them in the same year, '62, one in New York and one here." He says he didn't like Dali's paintings, but he enjoyed Dali. Bailey is a painter, too, and a sculptor. There are a couple of his sculptures in the exhibition, including Dead Andy, a dourly witty memento mori of Andy Warhol. "This show is not a retrospective," he says, apropos of some thought of his own. "It's just some portraits over different periods. How can it be a retrospective? There's nothing in it: no landscapes, no paintings, no anything. But dimwitted journalists call it a retrospective all the time. Bailey has worked in journalism, for newspapers, magazines and fashion glossies, but doesn't much like journalists. In part, this seems to stem from floggings he has received for youthful statements he made about women - he has married four, including the actress Catherine Deneuve, and, apparently, had sex with many others - but I suspect that disliking journalists has also just become a habit he enjoys. He still shoots edgy, artistic fashion about once a year, and continues to take on advertising work. What does he enjoy doing the most? "F...ing," he says. Okay, um, which of his portraits is special to Bailey? "I don't do specials," he says. "They're all special, or else they wouldn't be in the show. I don't do favourites. I don't have favourite colours. I'm not at nursery school. Bailey knew and photographed the Rolling Stones, John Lennon and Yoko Ono. He took the picture of Mick Jagger with his head in a bag on the cover of the Stones' album Goats Head Soup. But I'm struck by a more recent portrait of an ageing Marianne Faithfull, overweight and wrinkled, laughing in her underwear. "I don't like that one. I've stopped people using it, because she gets too upset. I mean, it's a great picture, but if she doesn't like it, what's the point? They all put Kate Moss next to her in that picture. Cheap journalists. Something I've said has annoyed him, or reminded him of something someone else once said, or made him feel judged. "I don't really care what you think about photography," he says, "because you're not an expert. As you're a writer, literally, you don't know too much visually like I do, so whatever you think doesn't interest me that much. Clearly, none. "It's like me telling you, 'I don't think you're as good as Dostoyevsky, but you might get better. You might even get to Emile Zola's level, but you'll never get beyond there. I'd be happy to be Graham Greene. "Well," says Bailey, "he's my favourite modern writer. I don't care who his favourite writer is, because he's a photographer. "And I don't care that you don't care," says Bailey. "I'm not interviewing you, though. I'm going to say what I think. You're the one who's going to say, 'This is this and that's that and it's all bullshit.' But you don't know anyway, like most journalists. "Journalists, on the whole, are not very nice people. They twist everything to suit themselves. They're criticising you on a level they shouldn't be criticising you on, because they're not on that level themselves. Because they'd be f...ing writing War and Peace, and not f...ing about doing an interview with me. Having reached the peak of his invective, Bailey climbs down a little. He says I seem like a nice bloke, but he's never read anything I've written. He asks an assistant for a decaffeinated coffee and says to me, "Come on. Tell me ... "Tell you what? I'm not going to do your f...ing job for you. Ask me what you want to know. Journalists used to call their photographers 'the monkeys'. And I guess most of them were monkeys. I suspect it's many, many years since a journalist called Bailey a monkey, and Bailey's argument isn't with me or anybody in the room, or perhaps even anybody living. I feel as if I've walked into a grudge match and been mistaken for the opponent. "Have you got webbed feet?" he asks. (I wonder if he believes Jews have webbed feet.) "I'm just trying to conjure them up in my mind," says Bailey, "to make you more interesting. It's difficult to take offence, partly because he's small and old, but partly because he's genuinely funny - and if I'm going to be the butt of a joke, it might as well be a good one. "There's a dancer in the show," says Bailey, "and he's got webbed hands. I'd definitely photograph you if you had webbed hands. There is a wall of pictures of Bailey's wife, the model Catherine Dyer, in the show. She is shown naked, apparently masturbating, pregnant and giving birth (but not all in the same photograph). "I could do a book on most of my wives, really: Catherine [Deneuve], for sure; Rosemary [Bramble], for sure; Marie [Helvin] for sure. Well, I did a book on Marie. He'd do a series of "Bailey's Wives" books? "Yeah, wouldn't the journalists love that?" he says. "That would really give them something interesting to write about. But Catherine Deneuve is now 70 years old, and fashion model and writer Helvin has auctioned her vintage clothes. It might be that even "the journalists" wouldn't be so interested any more. Bailey asks an assistant if the Polaroid came back, and looks critically at the print. "It hasn't got the magic of the old Polaroid, has it?" he notes. Although the film is available again, "nobody's remade the cameras, so we have to buy old, broken cameras". "Different cameras have different attitudes," he says. "The cameras make you take on their attitude. But you really have to be somebody who's been brought up with proper film photography, not just digital, because there's no attitude to those cameras. There's nothing wrong with them. If I go to Afghanistan or Delhi or somewhere a bit dodgy, we take digital, because you don't want to be f...ing about loading film when you're jumping in and out of helicopters. But if I'm somewhere you don't get X-rayed all the time, I try to shoot on film. I quite like the attitude of the old Polaroid. "So your mother was a Jew?" he asks, suddenly. "Are you circumcised?" He repeats the question insistently, three times, until I reply. "Well, I'm circumcised," he says. "I don't have a foreskin, either. At this point, his wife arrives to pick him up. "Good timing," says Bailey. And it is. I've learnt enough about the photographer David Bailey - I can put some adjectives to the noun - and he knows more than enough about me. The list and grades are a blending of present performance and long-term potential. Comments are welcome, but in the end all analysis and responsibility is mine. Full reports on all of players can be found in the 2014 Baseball Prospect Book. The book has been delayed by my head injury, but it will come out eventually. All of these grades are preliminary and subject to change. Grade A prospects are the elite. They have a reasonable chance of becoming stars or superstars. In theory, most Grade A prospects develop into major league regulars, if injuries or unanticipated problems don't intervene. Note that is a major "if" in some cases. Grade B prospects have a good chance to enjoy successful careers. Some will develop into stars, some will not. Most end up spending several years in the majors, at the very least in a marginal role. Grade C prospects are the most common type. These are guys who have something positive going for them, but who may have a question mark or three, or who are just too far away from the majors to get an accurate feel for. A few Grade C guys, especially at the lower levels, do develop into stars. Some end up as role players or bench guys. Many don't make it at all. Also note that there is diversity within each category. I'm a tough grader; Grade C+ is actually good praise, and some C+ prospects (especially at lower levels) turn out very well indeed. Finally, keep in mind that all grades are shorthand. You have to read the full comment in the book for my full opinion about a player, the letter grade only tells you so much. A Grade C prospect in rookie ball could end up being very impressive, while a Grade C prospect in Triple-A is likely just a future role player. 1) Nick Castellanos, 3B, Grade B+: Borderline A-. Given his youth he projects as a strong regular and could very well develop into a genuine star, although I remain uncertain about exactly what type of hitter Castellanos will become in the long run. I can see him producing less batting average/OBP than expected, while eventually producing more isolated power and home runs. 2) Jake Thompson, RHP, Grade B-: 2012 second round pick had solid campaign in the Midwest League, 3.13 ERA with 91/32 K/BB in 83 innings, kept on short leash workload. Texas prep arm can hit 95 with chance for three solid secondary pitches. 3) Jonathon Crawford, RHP, Grade B-: 2013 first-rounder from Florida features plus fastball and slider, dominates when his mechanics are right, which they aren’t always. May wind up as a reliever in the long run but upside is quite high. 4) Devon Travis, 2B, Grade B-: Hit .350 with 16 homers in A-ball, excellent plate discipline, stole 22 bases, played good defense. Rorschach test player. What you think of Travis says more about you than it does about Travis. Personally I like him: I had him rated as a Sleeper Alert guy entering last season, not just because of his numbers but because I thought the tools were underrated, too. He certainly lived up to that. Let’s see how he does in Double-A. 5) Corey Knebel, RHP, Grade B-: University of Texas reliever should zip through the minors rapidly with mid-90s heat and wicked curveball. His changeup isn’t bad either and he could probably start arsenal-wise though unconventional high-effort mechanics make the bullpen a better fit in my view. 6) Robbie Ray, LHP, Grade B-: Erratic lefty acquired from Nationals in Doug Fister trade. Horrible in ’12 but solid in ’13, shows low-90s heat and a good changeup but breaking ball comes and goes. Might wind up in the pen if that doesn’t get more consistent. 7) Bruce Rondon, RHP, Grade B-: Hard-throwing closer candidate will miss ’14 with Tommy John surgery. 8) Eugenio Suarez, INF, Grade B-: Very effective in A-ball, had some contact issues in Double-A but I still like the total package here including solid defense and a chance to hit for average with more pop than many middle infielders. 9) Tyler Collins, OF, Grade C+: Hurrah! On the opening day roster. Added power at the expense of contact/average/OBP last year in Double-A. It will be interesting to see which approach wins out in Detroit and how patient they will be if he struggles. 10) Daniel Fields, OF, Grade C+: Better tools than Collins and also had a solid year at Erie. Oddly, everyone seems to be forgetting about him right when he finally figures out what he’s doing. He’s always had the tools and it wasn’t his fault that the Tigers jumped him to High-A too soon a few years ago. He should be a workable fourth outfielder in time. 11) James McCann, C, Grade C+: Excellent defensive catcher with a lukewarm bat. I can’t prove it without a time machine, but I think he could have some surprisingly good offensive years in his late 20s. Even if he doesn’t his glovework should result in a big league career of respectable length. 12) Hernan Perez, INF, Grade C+: Suddenly hit for average last year in the high minors though not in Detroit. For me he profiles as a utilityman with a solid glove and occasional periods of respectable hitting, though some people like him a lot better than that. 13) Drew VerHagen, RHP, Grade C+: Vanderbilt sinkerball specialist was solid in High-A (2.81 ERA, 35/27 K/BB in 67 IP) and Double-A (3.00, 40/17 K/BB in 60 IP). Eats innings, keeps the ball down and suppresses home runs. Low K/IP ratio is a caution flag for higher levels, but he could make it work as a fourth starter or a reliever. 14) Jeff Thompson, RHP, Grade C+: 2013 third round pick, University of Louisville right-hander is big (6-6), very athletic, has reasonable velocity and a chance for three solid big league pitches, which sounds like a bunch of other Tigers prospects. He tends to get lost in the shuffle but he shouldn’t. 15) Kyle Lobstein, LHP, Grade C+: Doesn’t throw hard, but has a good curveball and changeup, pitched well in Triple-A last year (3.48 ERA, 65/25 K/BB in 72 innings). Has a chance to be a fifth starter under the right circumstances. 16) Joe Jimenez, RHP, Grade C+: Undrafted high school free agent from Puerto Rico was a steal for just $100,000: he could have been a fifth round pick but scared everyone off with bonus demands. Fanned 24 in 18 innings in rookie ball and has the velocity to back that up at higher levels. Credit to the Tigers for staying with this one; he could leap up the lists this year. 17) Javier Betancourt, SS, Grade C+: Hit .333/.379/.441 in rookie ball and is making the jump to full-season West Michigan this year at age 18. Contact hitter with a lively bat, signed for $200,000 out of Venezuela, nephew of Edgardo Alfonzo. May wind up at second base but bat looks highly interesting. 18) Endrys Briceno, RHP, Grade C: 22-year-old from Venezuela generates really nice scouting reports despite unimpressive track record. Hits mid-90s and reportedly shows potential with slider and changeup. His 4.47 ERA and 65/51 K/BB in 117 innings in the friendly Midwest League were his best marks since reaching North America and the first time his ERA was below 5.00. Poor K/IP and H/IP ratios do not match reports of plus stuff. Certainly a high-ceiling arm, but either the numbers will improve to match the reports, or the reports will eventually weaken to match the numbers. Some sources are making a full-court press predicting a massive leap forward, others are less enthusiastic. It will be interesting to see who is right. 19) Buck Farmer, RHP, Grade C: Georgia Tech ace pitched well in NY-P League (3.09 ERA, 33/7 K/BB in 32 innings) which was not unexpected given feel for his craft. Doesn’t have exceptional stuff but knows how to pitch and will probably move through A-ball quickly. 20) Domingo Leyba, INF, Grade C: Led Dominican Summer League in OPS. DSL performance is usually not particularly predictive, but the scouting reports are good and he could take a large leap forward on subsequent lists. I am by nature cautious about DSL and VSL players until we see them in North America, thus his ranking here. OTHERS: Ramon Cabrera, C; Harold Castro, 2B; Casey Crosby, LHP; Calvin Drummond, RHP; Steven Fuentes, INF; Bryan Holaday, C; Jordan John, LHP; Jordan Lennerton, 1B; Melvin Mercedes, RHP; Steve Moya, OF; Jose Ortega, RHP; Wilsen Palacios, RHP; Zac Reininger, RHP; Raph Rhymes, OF; Jose Valdez, RHP; Kevin Ziomek, LHP. The Tigers have a reputation for having an uninspiring farm system but I don’t think that is particularly fair. Certainly the system is rather thin on impact talent, a reflection of the fact that the front office has been In "win now" mode for several years, resulting in prospect trades, late draft choices, and smaller amateur signing budgets. This may sound like a distinction without a difference, but while the system is thin in some senses, I don’t think it is weak. The Tigers have a strategy, they execute it well, and they’ve shown they can produce players who can fill holes, either through trade or direct insertion into the lineup when necessary. Looking at the hitting, the development of Nick Castellanos made it easier to make the roster work for the Prince Fielder/Ian Kinsler trade. There is a noted lack of impact bats after him, although there are some potentially solid role players present. There is considerable depth up the middle, most of it mined from Latin America. A dark cloud is menacing the cherished US summer season of outdoor barbecueing: a deadly pig virus that has been sweeping through farms and driving up pork prices. The porcine epidemic diarrhoea (PED) virus was first officially detected in the United States in May 2013. Now it is active in 27 of the nation's 50 states. The contagious virus is not transmissible to humans and poses no risk to food safety, assures the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). But it causes diarrhoea and vomiting in pigs and is fatal in piglets. Fearing the virus will produce a shortfall in pork supplies during barbecue season, some processors have stocked up their warehouses, sending prices higher. Prices for pork for delivery in April have soared more than 45 per cent on the Chicago Board of Trade since the beginning of the year. On Friday, the futures contract slipped two cents to close at $US1.23 per pound ($A2.98 per kilogram). The USDA does not have official data on the number of pigs infected by the virus. But according to Rich Nelson of the agricultural market research and trading firm Allendale, as many as seven million pigs have been hit since last May or about six to eight per cent of production. With some 113 million pigs sent to the slaughterhouse in 2012, the United States is the world's second-leading pork producer behind China. Stepped-up precautionary measures have been taken in a bid to contain the spread of the virus, such as making sure trucks are spotlessly clean or limiting the number of outside visitors to farms. The virus is expected to become less contagious when temperatures climb. Some fear the supply of pork products will be drastically reduced during the summer season of BLT sandwiches - made with bacon, lettuce and tomato - and above all of barbecues, which are fired up full blast from Memorial Day, the last Monday of May, through to Labor Day, the first Monday of September. "The peak of PED was four or five weeks ago," which means that the worst impact probably will be in June or early July, said Nelson, director of research at Allendale. "During those months, hogs slaughter will be 10 per cent to 15 per cent lower. Even though it is difficult to predict precisely the effect on the prices of ham, chops and sausages in stores, analysts are saying it will be a hog-sized jump. Nelson sees prices climbing as much as eight per cent. "Sticker shock" could be damped by two factors, said Jason Roose, vice president of US Commodities, a grain and livestock investment firm in West Des Moines, Iowa, the heart of the nation's Farm Belt. For one, pork producers are benefiting from the lower cost of corn to feed their animals and are selling fatter pigs which are 2.72kms heavier than a year ago, weighing 127.9 kilos on average. And the second factor is price-point pressure on consumers, the commodities analyst said. "If some of the pork prices are getting high enough that it compares to lobster prices, you buy lobster or you buy less ribs," Roose said. Consumers would be unlikely to turn to beef, the price for which has shot up in recent months due to the drought in several big cattle-raising states including Texas. But there are "lots of substitutes" out there, he said, suggesting fish, turkey and chicken. Just before Christmas, a device that had been drilled into Rebekah's bone was removed and replaced with a cast - allowing her to stand again for the first time since the tragedy. ‘To put two feet on the ground again was the most amazing feeling,’ she told NBC News at the time. ‘And just right before Christmas, too. It’s like, what an amazing present this year. But Gregory still has a long way to go, and she has described the moment she put her foot down in the boot as extremely painful. ‘It was awful. It was the worst pain all over again,’ she said. ‘Putting it on the ground doesn’t feel right and it feels like it’s just crushing what bones I have left. Her doctors estimated that it would be another six months to a year before she is walking more freely.She said she is so motivated by the achievement.
