The high point of the People’s National Movement’s Women Forum on Thursday night was the intervention of Laurel Lezama-Lee Sing, who declared she “fully supported Dr Keith Rowley as the next political leader and Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago”. Lezama-Lee Sing told the cheering crowds contrary to what “may be coming out in the public debate, a big percentage of the people of Arima were solidly endorsing Rowley”. The fact that Lezama-Lee Sing is from Arima, the political base of Rowley’s rival, Pennelope Beckles-Robinson, and that she is married to the son of former Port of Spain mayor Louis Lee Sing, one of Rowley’s severest critics, was not lost on the audience, who exploded with applause following her remarks. Former senator Fitzgerald Hinds said he wanted to record that “Laurel Lezama-Lee Sing spoke on behalf of the sensible elements of the Lee Sing family”. The comment brought the house down, provoking the quip of “Look at trouble” from a laughing Lezama-Lee Sing. Lezama-Lee Sing had also stated when she looked at the opposing slate, she was a little concerned the person was riding on the wave of being a woman, but when one looked at the slate, women were not being afforded positions of honour or being treated properly. The meeting took place at City Hall, Port of Spain, which was the turf of the former mayor Lee Sing. At the meeting guest speaker Faris Al-Rawi, party public relations officer, took Lee Sing to task for a series of articles published recently in the Express which were critical of Rowley. Al-Rawi noted Rowley had maintained a studious silence to Lee Sing’s barbs. He said he believed this was so because Lee Sing’s arguments had not reached the level of intellectual discourse needed to generate a response from the leader. Noting that Lee Sing was critical of the decision to allow party members, whether financial or not, to participate in this election, Al-Rawi said Rowley wanted to err on the side of “inclusion”—a position which had been endorsed by the General Council. Al-Rawi recalled that under the delegate system, no one questioned the fact that the delegates represented members, some of whom may have been financial. The financial status of people who participated in the party group meetings to determine how the delegate should vote was never an issue. He said he never heard the critics saying don’t let delegates who represent non-financial members vote. Al-Rawi also looked at Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Sport Minister Anil Roberts, “the latest cry baby”. Quoting the Prime Minister’s statements that her leadership was “not formed of loud and angry politicians who feel that shouting and attack everything is the best way to be heard”, Al-Rawi said one could not have found a better description of Roberts. He said the Prime Minis­ter, who holds the record of having made the fewest contributions in Parliament among prime ministers and who only wants to speak last so that no one can reply to what she has said in the Parliament, put Roberts who was only about “comedy, comess, bacchanal and volume” to respond to a serious motion on the $1 billion contract awarded to Super Industrial Services by the National Gas Company and the Water and Sewerage Authority. He noted the Government had a record of having 18 people removed from office. Main speaker Senator Camille Robinson-Regis launched a blistering attack on the Government, singling out each minister as she detailed either his alleged treatment of women, his alleged abuse of authority or other alleged infractions. She cited Glenn Ramadharsingh, Chandresh Sharma, Anand Ramlogan, Tim Gopeesingh, Vasant Bharath, Devant Maharaj and Anil Roberts, “...and they saying that is because of the high ideals of the Prime Minister? They might be high, but they have no ideals”, she said. She noted since all of these people were selected by the Prime Minis­ter, it was a measurement of her poor choices and “an absence of leadership”. “Trinidad and Tobago cannot continue with this ‘wukless’ excuse for a Government,” she added. Robinson-Regis derided Roberts, saying he liked to be loud and to shout, but was an “empty vessel” and a “soft man”. Calypsonian Penguin’s “Woman Don’t Like Soft Man” was then played and the audience sang along. She said Rowley was a man of steel. “He is not a soft man, I have been told,” she said, provoking chuckles from the audience. The audience shouted the names of “Faris” and “Hinds”, and Robinson-Regis said she was also informed they too were not “soft men”. Robinson-Regis said in the face of all this, the media, NGOs, chambers and the clergy had remained relatively quiet.
