A 2013 World Series championship banner for the Boston Red Sox is unfurled on the Green Monster during pre-game ceremonies before the start of the game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Fenway Park on Friday.BOSTON — Boston Red Sox fans attending Friday’s game did most of their cheering before the game when the team received their 2013 World Series championship rings at Fenway Park. The Milwaukee Brewers went on to beat the Red Sox 6-2, spoiling the team’s home opener. Sox slugger David Ortiz received the most cheers from fans during the ring ceremony. The veteran, who is the only Red Sox player with three championship rings (2004, ‘07, ‘13), also was presented with a ring recognizing the MVP award he won in the World Series. The ring ceremony began with a montage on the video board that highlighted last season’s accomplishments. “During this special celebration of the 2013 championship win, we were honored to present our players and uniformed personnel and staff with these spectacular rings that we hope capture the emotions of the 2013 season,” said Red Sox principal owner John W. Henry. “The rings celebrate the Red Sox’s winning history, capture the unique personality of the team and highlight the city of Boston which was an integral part of this team’s story last season,” Henry added. The ceremony also drew two players the Red Sox didn’t expect to make it, right fielder Shane Victorino and pitcher Ryan Dempster. Victorino had been suffering from the flu and Dempster is on the restricted list this season, facing possible retirement. However, Dempster put on his uniform and was accompanied by his son. Red Sox manager John Farrell said he had been looking forward to the ceremony. “It will be a great day to look back on a very, very special year,” he said before the ceremony. Farrell also has a World Series ring from 2008, when he served as Boston’s pitching coach under former manager Terry Francona. But Farrell said it’s in a safe and he has just worn that one once. The skipper said he probably won’t wear this large ring too much either. When talking about it, Farrell paused and then just smiled. “I guess I’m not into bling,” he said with a smile. After the ring ceremony, a first-pitch ceremony was held that featured recent Red Sox champions Pedro Martinez, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek, each carrying a World Series trophy. Retired Bruins hockey player Mark Recchi also was present and drove a golf cart onto the field with former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. Jackson) and S.H.IE.L.D. 1. Introduced in the “Captain America” comics in September 1969, The Falcon has the distinction of being the first African-American superhero featured in the mainstream comic world. “I enjoyed drawing people of every kind. I drew as many different types of people as I could into the scenes I illustrated, and I loved drawing black people. I always found their features interesting and so much of their strength, spirit and wisdom written on their faces. I approached Stan, as I remember, with the idea of introducing an African-American hero and he took to it right away. 2. Controlled by a cybernetic link, the wings can be instantly reconfigured into “dozens of different cruise configurations. State officials in Michigan, seeking to move onto an even-faster track a test case on same-sex marriage, on Friday asked the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to put that question before the full, en banc court without waiting for different three-judge panels to rule. All four states within the Sixth Circuit’s geographic area now have appeals on that issue pending at the appeals court, the new petition noted. This is the first time that a state that has had its ban on such marriages struck down in a district court has asked for full court review of an appeal. (Meanwhile, in one of the cases already at the Sixth Circuit, from Ohio, a judge has promised an even broader ruling soon. See this post, below). Federal judges in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee have ruled in favor of same-sex marriage claims — sometimes broadly, sometimes more narrowly – and each of those has now been appealed. The Sixth Circuit has put each of them on an expedited review schedule, but so far has given no indication that this would be done other than by separate three-judge panels. The normal path for cases in the federal appeals courts is nitially to three-judge panels and then, if the case is of major importance, perhaps to go before the full tribunal. It takes a majority vote of all of the active judges on the full court to grant such rehearings. Such en banc review is not common, but it also is not rare. Arguing that the constitutional controversy over gay and lesbian marriages is of “exceptional importance,” Michigan officials told the Circuit Court Friday that “the question’s importance is highlighted by the fact” that each of the four states in that Circuit had adopted a similar ban on such marriages and that each has been wholly or partly nullified. “To resolve this issue swiftly and to preserve the resources of the court and the parties, Michigan petitions for initial hearing en banc,” the state filing said, noting that all four cases from courts within the Circuit “are proceeding swiftly in parallel and will have briefing completed within weeks of each other. Michigan officials, of course, could only ask for en banc review in their own case, but if the Circuit Court took on that case, those from other states would probably be put on hold in the meantime. While the facts in each of the case do differ, the legal issues are essentially the same in each, and would be the same before an en banc court. The ruling against the Michigan ban was broader than those against the bans in the other three states. En banc review, of course, almost certainly would lead to an earlier appeal to the Supreme Court. Around the country, other appeals courts reviewing same-sex marriage cases are beginning a series of hearings this month and next in front of three-judge panels. Michigan officials have been fashioning their appeal of a judge’s ruling striking down that state’s ban on a theory that this was an affront to the voters of their state, where some 2.7 million voters approved the ban when it was adopted with a fifty-nine-to-forty-one percent margin ten years ago. The Michigan case, the state’s petition argued, “presents the question whether one of our most fundamental rights — the right to vote — matters or whether a judge can take an important social issue out of the hands of the voters by concluding it is not something about which reasonable citizens could disagree. Among the four states in this Circuit, the filing said, “more than 8.6 million people” overall voted to confine marriage rights to couples of one man and one woman. Laurie Libman-Wilson recently brought Studio Penny Lane to Flower Hill’s Row Collective. An artisan jewelry maker who plays on the ordinary beauty of the penny; a former Canyon Crest Academy art teacher who makes textile masterpieces; a young father who found a way to repurpose his son’s baby food jars into a full time gig; a handful of shop owners and artisans who treasure the local and unique, both the traditional and the eclectic: This is the Row Collective at Flower Hill Promenade. As part of its renovation over the last year, Flower Hill has carved out a part of the bottom floor of the center to serve as the Row. The management’s mission has been to find vendors with a certain type of vibe for this “artisan and curated” section of the mall. “It’s nice to have like-minded people in this space,” said Julie Rais, the former San Dieguito Union High School District art teacher turned-owner of Rais Case. The Row is made up of the stores Lone Flag, Van De Vort, Rais Case and Mr. B’s Luminaries. Three new stores have joined them and opened this month: Studio Penny Lane, Pink Soul and A Ship in the Woods’ WSOHOIDPS. The Row stores are connected by an open patio filled with wooden tables and seating areas with string lights dangling from the level above, book-ended by Sea and Smoke’s outdoor patio and a few empty storefronts for future Row denizens. The Van De Vort boutique is owner Andrea Van De Vort’s “dream come true” and Flower Hill holds a special place in her heart as she purchased her wedding dress from the center’s Bliss Bride. Her store is filled wall-to-wall with coveted Los Angeles lines such as Stone Cold Fox, Flynn Skye, Cleo Bella and MINK PINK that can’t be found anywhere else in San Diego. Customers can score in-style crop tops, jumpers, floppy bohemian hats, bright colored bikinis and maxi skirts. The look of Lone Flag across the way is timeless, trendless and well crafted. Sam Larson, who opened the store in November 2013, has a love for the “perfect pair of denim that wears and lasts, for boots that age beautifully and accessories made by hand with local materials. He worked in branding and apparel for many years but he was frustrated because he felt like he couldn’t find a place for his retail store that met his style in San Diego. “It was extremely frustrating finding a location anywhere that made sense,” Larson said. “I would’ve never looked at Flower Hill a year ago. But they had a vision, they wanted young, small businesses that are different. Larson admits his particular brand of different doesn’t exactly scream Del Mar but perhaps the Row is bringing about a shift. His clothing is understated, sophisticated and well made. While people can find Larson’s own Lone Flag sew and cut collection in other retailers, Flower Hill serves as his flagship store. He also collaborates and supports other local designers and businesses, such as small batch San Diego coffee roasters C&T Collective and James Coffee, whose grinds you can find on the shelves in his store. Pink Soul opened its doors officially over the weekend, although owner Heidi Lund was making sales even while she set up shop, a “perfect” little location with wood floors and an eye-catching light fixture as a centerpiece, a flea market find that was given new life by a coat of hot pink paint. “I need pink,” Lund said. She likes to stock her store with the funky and the local, you can find Mia Brazzilia workout wear designed by local martial arts instructor Kaneta Harmon and local designer Ashley Ann Bennett’s leather painted earrings and cuff bracelets. The Flower Hill store is Lund’s second location with the first Pink Soul on Highway 101 in Encinitas. “I had looked at the mall before but I thought it was old and tired,” Lund said of the pre-facelift Flower Hill. “I saw the changes that were taking place and I really like what’s going on with the center. I think it’s going to be a fun, happening type of place. Studio Penny Lane had its soft opening on March 25, with a grand opening planned sometime in May. Owner Laurie Libman-Wilson said her focus lately with her three-year-old business has been more on wholesale, she jumped on the opportunity to move into Flower Hill. “It’s just become such a great place that I couldn’t pass it up,” Libman-Wilson said. She was impressed by all of the renovations, the addition of Whole Foods as an anchor and the popular draw of the Cucina Enoteca restaurant and what they are trying to do with the Row section she will be in. “It’s going to be a cool little enclave of stores there, I’m really excited for it,” said Libman-Wilson. Libman-Wilson used to have a retail space on Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach, but she hopes her Flower Hill spot will be more of a workshop. “I won’t run any of my wholesale business out of there, I will probably do things like letting people be involved in the process of creating a piece,” Libman-Wilson said. One of her most popular items right now is her gratitude apothecary jars that promote a daily practice of gratitude. “Everytime you see a penny, acknowledge something you’re grateful for,” said Libman-Wilson. As it says on the jar: “A life lived in gratitude is a quiet joy. On Thursdays, you can find artisans working side-by-side in the Rais Case/Mr. B’s Luminaries space. The space is part storefront, part-workspace just as Libman-Wilson envisions her studio will be. “It always smells so good in here,” said Julie Rais of Rais Case of the oils used to lend fragrance to her partner Shem Gott’s French lavender, lemon grass, tea tree peppermint, cinnamon-vanilla and rosemary citrus candles in jars. Gott and Rais met randomly at a show in Los Angeles; a barter deal between them had Gott swapping one of Rais’ bags for his wife and Rais making off with one of his luminaries. About three months later, Rais got a phone call from Gott inquiring whether she would want to join him in the Flower Hill space. At the time, Rais was working as an art teacher at CCA . “I always thought there was something else for me. As a teacher you feel guilty saying that because so much of it is very rewarding,” Rais said. “ (The purses) started out as a hobby but I fell I love with what I was doing and the goal was to eventually do it full time. I never thought would actually happen. After the stores opened in November 2013, Rais first split time between the classroom and the store, coming to school happy and buzzing from her early morning work at the shop and sharing her real-life art experience with her students. She left the classroom for good in January but her students still visit often, “stoked” to have been a small part of the process. Rais’ creations come courtesy of beautiful 97 percent wool Pendleton fabric woven in Oregon; bolts of which fill up the workspace and are stacked as decor in the storefront. Mr. B’s big candle jars sit among Rais’ clutches, pillows, satchels, boot covers and her popular fanny packs, which are a very fashion-forward spin on the 1980s staple. Mr. B’s candles are all hand poured, all soy wax loaded up with essential oils for fragrance. Gott has also started doing succulent centerpieces in reclaimed wood trays, the wood coming from his childhood home’s fences. While art is being made in the Rais-Gott collaborative, down the Row a few doors is where art hopes to come alive. A Ship in the Woods opened over the weekend, moving from a residential home in the hills of Del Mar. Its name at Flower Hill is WSOHOIDPS, a word puzzle where the words A Ship in the Woods all appear. The founders, Kiersten Puusemp, RJ Brooks and Dan Fauchier, are all artists and creators. Puusemp works in installation, mixed media and performance; Brooks has a background in film studies and photography; and Fauchier is a professional construction facilitator with a lifelong appreciation of the arts. The three partners founded the non-profit foundation in 2010 in the Del Mar house to create an eclectic atmosphere for art exhibitions, musical performances, gatherings and other cultural events. “Originally the goal was simply to find interesting people doing interesting things and connect them using the house as a place to make that happen,” said Puusemp. They started with a series of group art shows and moved on to include music events, film screenings, lectures, comedy and a residency program. Their last event at an external venue, La Paloma Theatre, featured the films and a performance by actor and filmmaker Crispin Glover, the first time he’s performed in California in nearly a decade. Their lease at the house will end in August and they plan to remain there until then. “The Flower Hill location WSOHOIDPS is an experiment for us. Doing what we do in the house is somewhat unusual thing. Informed, thoughtful and interesting cultural programming is not necessarily what you would expect to find in a suburban house in Del Mar. It’s a bit out of place, like a ship in the woods,” said Puusemp. “Flower Hill is similar in that a high-end mini-mall is not exactly the place you’d expect to find what we’re doing either. At WSOHOIDPS they plan to exhibit and sell artwork in all mediums and are working on hosting film and music events in the courtyard. This year the Row’s courtyard has been activated in ways it never has before. Rais Case has held a few make-and-take events in collaboration with fellow Row shops. Retail shops around the patio kept their doors open into the evening with music, beverages and mingling, while for a small fee attendees could make key chains or wall hangings with Rais’ scraps of leather, feathers and handmade beads. Rais hopes to host another amateur artisan event during spring break for high schoolers, April 8-10. Teens will be welcome to come by and make a tassel, a candle and learn how to sew. Puusemp also said she hopes to coordinate as much as possible with everyone in the complex to make it a fun and interesting destination. “Jeffrey has this vision,” Rais said of the center’s owner Jeffrey Essakow. “Time will tell how far it can go because there’s a lot of potential. State officials in Michigan, seeking to move onto an even-faster track a test case on same-sex marriage, on Friday asked the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to put that question before the full, en banc court without waiting for different three-judge panels to rule. All four states within the Sixth Circuit’s geographic area now have appeals on that issue pending at the appeals court, the new petition noted. This is the first time that a state that has had its ban on such marriages struck down in a district court has asked for full court review of an appeal. (Meanwhile, in one of the cases already at the Sixth Circuit, from Ohio, a judge has promised an even broader ruling soon. See this post, below). Federal judges in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee have ruled in favor of same-sex marriage claims — sometimes broadly, sometimes more narrowly – and each of those has now been appealed. The Sixth Circuit has put each of them on an expedited review schedule, but so far has given no indication that this would be done other than by separate three-judge panels. The normal path for cases in the federal appeals courts is nitially to three-judge panels and then, if the case is of major importance, perhaps to go before the full tribunal. It takes a majority vote of all of the active judges on the full court to grant such rehearings. Such en banc review is not common, but it also is not rare. Arguing that the constitutional controversy over gay and lesbian marriages is of “exceptional importance,” Michigan officials told the Circuit Court Friday that “the question’s importance is highlighted by the fact” that each of the four states in that Circuit had adopted a similar ban on such marriages and that each has been wholly or partly nullified. “To resolve this issue swiftly and to preserve the resources of the court and the parties, Michigan petitions for initial hearing en banc,” the state filing said, noting that all four cases from courts within the Circuit “are proceeding swiftly in parallel and will have briefing completed within weeks of each other. Michigan officials, of course, could only ask for en banc review in their own case, but if the Circuit Court took on that case, those from other states would probably be put on hold in the meantime. While the facts in each of the case do differ, the legal issues are essentially the same in each, and would be the same before an en banc court. The ruling against the Michigan ban was broader than those against the bans in the other three states. En banc review, of course, almost certainly would lead to an earlier appeal to the Supreme Court. Around the country, other appeals courts reviewing same-sex marriage cases are beginning a series of hearings this month and next in front of three-judge panels. Michigan officials have been fashioning their appeal of a judge’s ruling striking down that state’s ban on a theory that this was an affront to the voters of their state, where some 2.7 million voters approved the ban when it was adopted with a fifty-nine-to-forty-one percent margin ten years ago. The Michigan case, the state’s petition argued, “presents the question whether one of our most fundamental rights — the right to vote — matters or whether a judge can take an important social issue out of the hands of the voters by concluding it is not something about which reasonable citizens could disagree. Among the four states in this Circuit, the filing said, “more than 8.6 million people” overall voted to confine marriage rights to couples of one man and one woman. Voters in Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio did so in 2004, and in Tennessee in 2006. Campbell says the best part of the show is teaching the nuns to sing and dance. Sunday is the last night to catch the multi-talented Ta’rea Campbell, starring as Doloris Van Cartier in the Broadway Across America production of “Sister Act: The Musical,” at the Keller Auditorium. Previously appearing on Broadway in “The Book of Mormon,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and starring as Nala in “The Lion King,” Campbell is burning up the road in her current role. A native of Philadelphia who spent most of her formative years in acting and performance schools, Campbell is one of the hottest up and coming artists on the New York stage. The Skanner News spoke with her about the show, her life and what she plans next. The Skanner News: You have had an incredible career and you’re very young. Singing is difficult, dancing is hard, and acting is really hard. Ta’Rea Campbell: I became a musical theater artist in college, by accident. I grew up in Philadelphia and I went to the high school for the creative and performing arts, it's called CAPA. I graduated with a major in acting there, and I had done a couple of musicals middle school and in high school. But I was really focused on being a straight actor, moving to New York and doing lots of plays. When I got to MarymountManhattanCollege in New York City, a friend dared me to audition for a musical -- which I did not get, I think I sang the National Anthem or something – and the head of the musical theater department was quite impressed. She had really very few African American women in the program. She said, who are you, and where have you been? Please come be in the musical theater department. I really didn’t have time in my schedule but essentially she let me audit a lot of the classes, so I graduated with a minor in musical theater. And after I graduated from college I began working at my college as an administrative assistant, but that didn't last very long because I quickly got a job, got my equity card, and I've been working ever since. TSN: You’ve appeared off Broadway in a regional theater production of “Caroline, or Change.” It's a heartbreaking drama, completely different from the hilarious comic role that you're playing right now. Campbell: There are a couple. I think I'd like to be a mother first. My second dream is that I would love to originate a role in a musical that is the story of human life, and not a black life. Very often as a minority woman you get cast in a show that is specifically written for a black person; as I get older that's really something that's important to me. And I would love to be in a movie version of “Sister Act, The Musical. TSN: “Sister Act” is considered to be one of the funniest movies of all-time. And of course the Broadway show one five Tony awards. Campbell: My favorite part is a number called “Raise Your Voice.” It's where Dolores is trying to teach the nuns how to sing, and they are really, really bad. And I get to listen to them sing poorly every night, on purpose, and it's really funny. And then I get to teach them dance moves. Because there's a lot of improv in the show, I get to make it something different every night, and they just have to follow along with what I'm doing. So for everybody, that keeps the show fresh. TSN: I'm stuck on the fact that Whoopi Goldberg produced the show. It seems like a real labor of love, and she is, again, one of the smartest people in the United States in my own personal opinion. Campbell: She has a connection to the show, you know, she did the movie and she has a really sharp connection. I don't think she wanted to see it die and she saw a medium that would be marketable and successful and she was correct. Campbell: That's very interesting that you asked that. What's immediately next is that I'm planning my wedding. My husband and I eloped in November and we are planning a huge party celebration in September. It's quite difficult to do on the road and so, we have a lot of Skype business meetings as far as our wedding is concerned. and that's what I'm really planning on now. But it's been a secret dream of mine to write a novel. I struggle with it all the time because it's difficult to get in that space of being totally creative while you're not at home. By Campus Times · Published on April 04, 2014 6:22 PM · Editorial Observers, Opinions Politics aside, junior Antoinette Esce and sophomore David Stark come across as capable, confident, and personable. The passion and dedication that each candidate holds for their service to the student body can easily be heard in their voices when they speak about their plans. Their fervor and dedication is tempered by a friendly disposition and a genuine interest in the lives of the students they seek to serve. Both Antoinette and David are able to comfortably explain their ideas in a clear and pointed way, seldom stumbling over their words or finding themselves without something to say. But while their personalities and unique ability to communicate are great attributes in and of themselves, their style comes with substance. One of Antoinette and David’s primary initiatives that we are most excited about is their goal to improve communication between students and the Students’ Association (SA). We are thoroughly impressed with their dedication to bring student feedback into the 21st century. In an age of smartphones, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, students expect SA to keep up with the times. The candidates are well aware that in an era where major corporations are able to address problems in real time, students would appreciate the same service from SA. One of their major programs we took particular interest in was their intention to open a petition website, much like the change.org page run by the White House. Students would have the ability to create petitons, gather signatures and, if the petition is signed by enough students, the issue will be addressed by the SA senate. This program, in conjunction with a greater social media presence by SA, makes us confident that Antoinette and David are dedicated to ensuring SA continues to be an organization driven and directed by the needs of all students. While both presidential tickets presented great ideas, Anotinette and David’s ability to implement their ideas set them apart. They both boast significant experience, not only within SA, but in other various leadership roles in organizations around campus. Within SA, Antoinette and David have considerable experience planning and executing projects and initiatives through their roles as Committee Chairs. These roles have given them a special perspective on the nuances behind organizing and leading the bureaucracy of student government. Their self-described leadership styles and track record indicate that both Antoinette and David have a solid grasp on the importance of balancing leading by example, taking charge, and delegating efficiently. Their exceptional connections with UR administration and community leaders give us confidence that they will have the ear of the movers and shakers of the university and will effectively be able to assemble the proper support their plans need to come to fruition. As SA elections in recent years went uncontested, we are ecstatic that this year’s race will be more competitive. Although we are not always happy with the decisions SA makes, the organization is often one of the best vehicles to enact student-driven change. With this in mind, it is essential that students at UR make their voices heard in these elections. We encourage everyone to closely examine each platform, ask questions, consult other sources, and become an informed voter. In our opinion, Antoinette and David are the strongest candidates in this election. Their qualifications and platform alone thorougly impressed us, but it was the intangible qualities of charismatic and effective leaderdship we saw in each of them that truly solidified our decision. We fully endorse their candidacy and firmly believe Antoinette Esce and David Stark are the best choice for the future President and Vice President of SA. and reflects the majority opinion of Campus Times. If the government uses the opportunity to abandon the two-state paradigm, it stands its best chance in 20 years of succeeding. On Monday, former prime minister Ehud Olmert’s career ended. Earlier this month, former IDF chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. (ret.) Gabi Ashkenazi’s career ended. And on Tuesday, the phony peace process ended. In the lead-up to last year’s elections, the media and key political figures were yearning for Olmert’s return to politics. In July 2008, Olmert was forced to cede leadership of the Kadima party, and so opt out of running for reelection, when then-attorney-general Menahem Mazuz announced he was indicting the premier on corruption charges. Olmert left office in March 2009 when his government was replaced by Binyamin Netanyahu’s coalition government. The public abandoned its support for Olmert in the summer of 2006 as a result of his incompetent leadership of the Second Lebanon War. By the end of the summer, Olmert’s approval rating stood at 3 percent. But with the able assistance of the media, and of Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman who saved Olmert’s government by joining it, Olmert was able to weather the storm and keep going despite the public’s lack of faith in his leadership and ardent desire to force him from office. The media’s romance with Olmert began formally in late 2003, when he followed then-premier Ariel Sharon from the center-right to the far Left. Indeed, as Sharon abandoned his pledges to voters and adopted the platform of the defeated Labor Party of unilaterally withdrawing from Gaza, Olmert outflanked him from the Left. Always a political pugilist, Olmert was eager to attack everyone who opposed Sharon’s withdrawal plan. He had no qualms about using rank demonization to attack his former political allies in the Likud. It was Olmert’s newfound devotion to the platform of the far Left that won him the support of media heavies like Yediot Aharonot’s Nahum Barnea, Ma’ariv’s Ben Caspit and Channel 2’s Amnon Abramovich. They were more than happy to attack as delusional independent investigative reporter Yoav Yitzhak who broke nearly every corruption story regarding Olmert, beginning in 2005. After four years of desultory, at best, probes between 2009 and 2012, Olmert was indicted in four separate cases on corruption charges. After he was acquitted of most of the charges in his first two trials, his media allies began a campaign to return him to politics. Only Olmert, they said, had a chance to defeat Netanyahu. None of the other leftist party heads had a shot. But alas, Olmert was otherwise engaged, in his criminal defense. And now that he is a convicted felon, Olmert will never be able to return to politics. Even his media friends have to cut their losses and find a new leader. Several years ago, they were certain that they had their man. Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi was promoted to the helm of the IDF following his predecessor Dan Halutz’s forced resignation due to his incompetent leadership of the army in the Second Lebanon War. Ashkenazi was everything the media and the Left love in a leader. He was a general. He was handsome. And he was going to save the IDF from its demoralization. He was going to introduce new training regimens and operational procedures to ensure that the next time the IDF went to war, its victory would be inarguable. Oh, and he was a leftist. Which meant that even if he failed, no one would ever find out. And indeed, Ashkenazi’s leadership of the IDF during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009 was a failure. As one senior commander put it shortly after the operation ended, “Gabi Ashkenazi marched the army into Gaza, and marched it out again, leaving Hamas in charge and Gilad Schalit behind. Officers who wished to take a more constructive approach to fighting, like OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant and Gaza Division commander Brig.-Gen. Moshe Tamir, were immediately placed on Ashkenazi’s enemies list. Allegations of wrongdoing against Ashkenazi first surfaced three-and-a-half years ago. In August 2010, Abramovich exposed a document on Channel 2 which purported to show that Galant was waging a negative campaign against Ashkenazi and then-Maj.-Gen. Benny Gantz to replace Ashkenazi as chief of the General Staff. Within a week the document was shown to be a forgery. It was concocted by an associate of Ashkenazi’s named Boaz Harpaz. It was leaked to Channel 2 by a senior Defense Ministry official, Gabi Shimoni, a close friend of Ashkenazi. Rather than pursue the story, which stank to high heaven, the media ignored it. Attorney- General Yehuda Weinstein refused to order the police to investigate it. And to the extent that the police had information that indicated illegal behavior by Ashkenazi’s associates beyond the leak and the forgery specifically, they were ordered not to pursue them. The only reason that the story of the forged document didn’t disappear is because state comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss investigated it, and Channel 1’s Ayala Hasson pursued it. And due to their efforts, the police were shamed into investigating. Now it is apparent that the story of the forged document was part of a much larger abuse of power by Ashkenazi and his loyal foot soldiers. Earlier this month, Ashkenazi’s closest aides Col. (res.) Erez Winer and former IDF spokesman Brig.-Gen. (res.) Avi Benayahu were arrested in connection to rising allegations of mass abuse of power. Since then, a parade of Ashkenazi’s close associates including current Deputy Chief of General Staff Maj.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkott and deputy director-general of the Defense Ministry Betzalel Tribor have been called in for questioning. The widening probe paints a revolting picture of a mass abuse of power by Ashkenazi, facilitated by senior IDF officers and officials at the Defense Ministry and then covered up by senior officials at the Justice Ministry and the police, with the active collusion of the media. Ashkenazi, it appears, was positioning himself to become the next prime minister. To this end, he allegedly decided to end the careers of IDF officers who criticized his leadership. And far more egregiously, he actively undermined then-defense minister Ehud Barak, and subverted Barak’s authority and that of the elected government in a bid to force Netanyahu and Barak to toe his timid line on Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Although the police probe is only at its early stages, and it is far too early to know who if anyone will be indicted for what, as a result of the investigation Ashkenazi’s political aspirations have been destroyed. More important, the permanent bureaucracy, which enabled Ashkenazi to run roughshod over democratic norms in his quest to position himself as the prime minister in waiting, has been weakened. Ashkenazi’s foot soldiers are all in trouble. And their troubles will likely deter other officers and senior officials from abusing their power in similar ways in the future. Each new revelation of wrongdoing in the ongoing probe also discredits Ashkenazi’s protectors in the permanent law enforcement bureaucracy. Olmert’s fall and Ashkenazi’s fall coincide with the implosion of the so-called peace process. For the past generation, allegiance to the phony peace process with the PLO has been the glue that has held the Left together. No matter how opposed to concessions the public became, the leftist establishment maintained its faith and total commitment to continued appeasement of the PLO. In large part they did so because allegiance to the peace process earned them the support and legitimization of the US. In the absence of any capacity to win the public’s support for continued concessions to the PLO, the Left has used its close ties to the US as a shield from criticism and as valuable leverage against the government. Only the Left, it was said, could protect Israel’s alliance with the US. Back in January, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon let the truth be known about the nature of Secretary of State John Kerry’s peace process. In private remarks reported by Yediot, Ya’alon said, “There are no actual negotiations with the Palestinians. The Americans are holding negotiations with us and in parallel with the Palestinians. So far, we are the only side to have given anything – the release of murderers – and the Palestinians have given nothing. This week, Kerry proved that Ya’alon’s statement was a gross understatement. The US is not acting as a go-between between the sides. It is acting as the PLO’s proxy. By offering Israel to trade imprisoned Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard for Palestinian terrorist murderers, Kerry transformed the US from the leader in the war against terrorism, into the champion of terrorists. Moreover, he indicated that he views Pollard as a hostage that the US is free to use to extort concessions to terrorists from Israel. As a result of Kerry’s scandalous behavior, the US media, which for 20 years have enthusiastically supported every US effort to force Israel to make concessions to the PLO, lost their stomach for the show. Everyone from The New York Times to The Washington Post to The Wall Street Journal and network news attacked Kerry for his actions. To a degree, the US media’s castigation of Kerry was unfair. He only followed the two-state model to its logical conclusion. Since the Palestinians refuse to abandon their goal of destroying Israel, they will never agree to a peace deal with Israel that will require them to live at peace with the Jewish state. As a result, they will never make any concessions to Israel. The only way to keep this fraudulent negotiating process going is for the US to both coerce Israel into making more and more one-sided concessions to the PLO, such as freeing terrorist murderers form prison, and providing Israel with US payoffs to make the government continue to abide by a fiction. In other words, Kerry had no option other than to offer up Pollard as a hostage to be swapped in exchange for freedom to Palestinian terrorists. Transforming the US into the proxy of a terrorist organization was just the beginning of Kerry’s failure. His desperate behavior showed PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas that there are no depths Kerry will not plumb to prolong the fictional peace process. And so on Tuesday, in an open act of contempt for Kerry, Abbas applied for membership in international bodies, in breach of the foundational requirement of the peace process: that a Palestinian state only be formed as a consequence of a peace agreement with Israel to prevent such a state from gaining independence while in a state of war with Israel. Until now, it was US pressure on Israel for concessions to the Palestinians that kept the Israeli Left going. Now, without any leadership, with its power base in the permanent bureaucracy weakened, and the US role as mediator wholly discredited not only among the Israeli public, but in the US media, the Left has nothing to latch on to.
