But Delany is facing his worst nightmare should the Badgers lose to Kentucky and Florida beat Connecticut in the national semifinals on Saturday at JerryWorld.There would be an all-SEC championship game.And the SEC collectively stinks in basketball.Blame the state of Michigan for such potential humiliation. Michigan State and Michigan squandered an opportunity to turn this weekend in Arlington, Texas, into a coronation of Big Ten basketball. Instead, the Spartans' and Wolverines' losses Sunday to lower seeds crystallized a growing sentiment that the Big Ten craftily erected a perception of great basketball on the shoulders of teams that are merely very good.There's a litany of justifications for the Big Ten's overall football struggles the past 15 years. Some of them valid, such as dramatic population shifts to the Sun Belt and a stronger, more compulsive football culture in the SEC. But it's laughable that the Big Ten is 14 years removed from its last national basketball crown considering there's far more highly rated basketball talent within close proximity to Big Ten schools than football talent - save for Ohio State.I've long defended this conference's basketball prowess the past 15 seasons, starting with MSU's NCAA title in 2000. During that time, the Big Ten has produced six different Final Four participants and five different national finalists. The Big Ten has had a team in five of the past six Final Fours and seven of the past 10. That's certainly admirable.But there comes a point when being good is no longer good enough. The Big Ten is at that point with Wisconsin defending its honor this weekend.Graduating your players, teaching them accountability and maturing them from boys into men after four years remain commendable goals. But if you're not the last team standing on the last night of the season, then you're still not doing enough.The Big Ten clings to the competitive fallacy that the physically grueling rigors of a brutal conference schedule aptly prepares its teams for any matchup they will face in the NCAA tournament. But the dearth of national championships suggests otherwise.Does anybody not a Spartans fan really care right now how dangerous MSU looked once fully healthy? Does anybody not a Wolverines fans really care right now that U-M won the Big Ten by three games?If you're not playing on the sport's grandest stage, then you've failed. Call it for what it is.The Badgers, in many ways, epitomize the personality of Big Ten basketball. Team first. It's more about the system than the player. Stars aren't recruited, but rather cultivated."You've got to root for the student-athlete," Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan said during a Thursday news conference at the Final Four.That remains the standard Big Ten dictum. And while there remains nobility in aspiring to a higher purpose than merely winning games, when you consistently can't win games that matter most, it becomes a feeble attempt to hide one's shame that you aren't as great as you once thought.
