A mangled bumper lies amid pieces of a wrecked fence at a residence... A drunken Milford man wreaked havoc at an unsuspecting Riverside home in the early hours of Thursday morning, leaving the terrified homeowners to pick up the wreckage. Police say Evan Rhodes, 32, was under the impression he was in Milford at the home of his ex-girlfriend when he set upon the residence, attempting to kick down the front door and ramming the garage with his car. He is now facing charges of driving under the influence, unsafe movement and fourth-degree criminal mischief. Rhodes was released on $250 cash bail, a fact that has one of the residents of the address scratching her head. "After all the damage he did and he's only held for $250?" said an exasperated Carol Weigold, who has lived at the corner of Silver Beech Road and Sound Beach Avenue Extension for more than 50 years. She said the damages, which include a splintered split rail fence, could top $1,000. Police said bond is not assessed punitively, but is based on flight risk, and Rhodes was judged to be a low one. According to Weigold, her housemate first heard heavy knocking at the front door just after 2 a.m. The knocker, a man, was unknown to her and she kept the door locked. When the knocking turned to banging, she shouted through the door that would call the police if he didn't stop. "The last thing she knew he was on his cell phone and he was heading to his car," said Weigold. "She thinks she saw him leave, but he definitely came back. When the man returned, she said, he approached a second door, and began stomping and kicking at it, leaving muddy footprints smeared across the surface. The attack crushed the storm door and damaged the front door, rendering the doorknob inoperable. After effectively locking himself out, the man returned to his vehicle. Though Weigold was sleeping soundly and was not woken by the kicking, she was jarred awake minutes later by the sound of him ramming his car into her garage, she said. She ran to the window just in time to see the unknown man reverse to the mouth of the driveway, rev up and smash into the garage door again, she said. Weigold immediately called the police, who were already on their way due to the report from her roommate. According to police reports, by the time officers arrived at home at 2:24 a.m., Rhodes was in his car, a Subaru Impreza, on the road outside the home, just feet away from a freshly smashed wooden fence. Damage to the front and garage door as well as Rhodes' Subaru was visible, police said. Upon approaching the vehicle, police said they found Rhodes intoxicated with an open container of alcohol in plain sight. When asked about the incident, he admitted to kicking the door, police said, and told them he had thought his ex-girlfriend was inside. He subsequently failed a field sobriety test and was placed under arrest for property damage and operating under the influence, police said. Rhodes is now scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on April 17. "Why does he have to take it out on some little old lady's house?" said Weigold. "If I knew that poor girl he was looking for, I'd tell him what a good thing it was she dropped him. While Weigold says she was shocked by the incident, it's not her first brush with destructive drivers. Two years ago, she said, an elderly man took out her entire split rail fence and several holly bushes with his car and kept driving. When police finally caught up to him at the East Putnam Avenue Balducci's, he told them he didn't recall any such incident, even as they pulled sprigs of holly from his grill.
